Frequently Asked Day Hike Questions
What do I need to bring on a day hike?
Please wear comfortable walking shoes. (Sneakers and running shoes are great, you do not have to wear boots.) We ask that you bring a rain jacket and extra layers, as well as one liter of water for half-day hikes and two liters of water for a full day hike. You are welcome to bring a day pack if you have one. *It is very important that you bring personal prescriptions, such as an inhaler or epi-pen, that you might need on the trail.
Where do we meet?
The guide will meet you on the first floor entrance of the Asheville Visitor and Convention Bureau, located at 36 Montford Ave. Asheville, NC 28801. From there you will caravan to the trailhead.
What if it's raining?
We hike in all kinds of weather - including rain and snow. If Blue Ridge Hiking Company deems the conditions unsafe for hiking or driving (e.g. flooding, lightning, ice) then we will cancel the trip and provide a full refund.
Is transportation included?
No. The fee for the day hike just covers the guide as well as snacks (for a half day hike) or lunch (for a full day hike). Most of our clients have a rental, as areas in western North Carolina can be remote and not accessible without a vehicle. Guides do not carpool.
What about if I need transportation?
We may be able to provide that option at an additional cost and if available. Please call (828) 713-5451 for more information.
If I have a special need or health condition, can I still hike?
Absolutely! We have worked with blind, deaf, and mobility impaired individuals. We can customize the trip and distance to meet your needs.
What about food? Can you accommodate any diet?
We provide hearty snacks on half-day hikes and picnic lunches on full-day hikes. We are happy to try and meet dietary needs and restrictions with advance notice.
Can we pick the route?
Sure, although we just ask that you keep an open mind until the day of the hike. Often, weather, drive time, mileage and a host of other considerations can inhibit what hike we take. Our guides know the area and how to choose a hike for a group extremely well, so if you know what you would like to see that can help us choose the appropriate hike for you.
Can I bring my pet?
No. Only service animals on leash are allowed on Blue Ridge Hiking Company outings.
Can I bring my firearm?
No.
What is your cancellation policy?
For Day Hikes, you may receive a full refund up until a week before your trip. You may change the date (within one calendar year) up until 48 hours before before your trip.
How long are the hikes?
Half Day Hikes range in distance from 3 to 5 miles and range in difficulty from easy to strenuous.
Full Day Hikes range in distance from 5 to 10 miles and range in difficulty from easy to strenuous.
How far away are the hikes?
Our hikes are anywhere from 30 minutes to just over an hour's drive from Asheville.
Do I tip my guide?
If your guide does an outstanding then you are welcome to show your appreciation with a tip.
