Sunset and Full Moon Night Hikes

Spend the evening with us as we chase a beautiful sunset and watch the Full Moon rise! We'll travel about an hour west of Asheville to Black Balsam Knob, a rocky bald with 360-degree views. Hike up to the bald in the daylight, then see sunset to the west and moonrise to the east. After sunset, return to the trailhead in the dark and ride back to Asheville.
Cost:
$120 per person
Cost includes a guided hike, snacks, transportation between Asheville and the trailhead, and the use of a headlamp for the duration of the hike. This hike requires 2 participants to operate; maximum group size is 6 hikers. If the minimum has not yet been met, we'll reach out to the registered participant 48 hours before the trip to discuss options.

In order to sign up for this trip, please go to our trip calendar and select your desired trip date. This hike is available on select Full Moon dates during 2026.
Itinerary:
You will meet your guide at our downtown location (70 College St, Asheville, NC 28801).
You will fill out a waiver and health form, then your guide will drive you to the trailhead. Drive time is about an hour. Hike about a mile up to the rocky summit of Black Balsam Knob, then settle in to watch the sunset to the west and moonrise to the east. Then return to the trailhead and ride back to town. We will begin hiking during daylight and finish hiking in the dark, so participants should have some level of comfort on trail. We include a headlamp for each person to use during the hike. Snacks are also included!
This trip's itinerary may change if we are expecting inclement weather. We hike rain or shine!
Guide:
Your guide for this hike will be Tamera "Caboosy" Trexler. Tam has been on many adventures, exploring the Mountains of WNC for 30 plus years. In addition to thru-hiking many long distance trails, Tam is also a world traveler. She can take you to the lesser known trails and landmarks of this region. All the while sharing her knowledge and love of it’s history, geology, wildflowers and animals. She is working on her Blue Ridge Naturalist Certification. Full moon and sunset hikes are her favorite!
What to Bring:
Please wear comfortable shoes and clothing, and bring a rain jacket and an extra layer for warmth. We recommend each guest brings at least 1 liter of water. You are responsible for any medications or personal items needed during the hike.
Your guide will provide snacks and a headlamp for you to use during the hike.
Cancellation Policy:
Payment in full is required to register. Trip cost includes a 15% non-refundable administrative fee. Hike may be cancelled up to 1 week before the trip for a refund (minus the 15% fee). Within 1 week, a 50% refund will be offered. Within 48 hours, a refund will only be offered if Blue Ridge Hiking Company cancels the trip due to severe weather or having not met the trip minimum.
If your guide does an outstanding job, please show your appreciation with a tip! Our team of well trained, professional guides never expects but always appreciates a tip. Industry standard gratuity is 20-25% of the trip cost.
