Transitioning to Lightweight Backpacking Gear
Virtual Workshop
November 21, 2024 at 6pm
Switching from traditional backpacking gear to lightweight or ultralight gear can be daunting (not to mention expensive!). In this virtual workshop, you'll learn some of the important considerations when switching to lightweight gear. We'll talk about how to prioritize your needs and wants in lightweight gear, common features in lightweight gear, what swaps will make the biggest impact, and what pieces of gear you should switch first. This workshop will not focus on specific brands and models (though we may mention some), but instead will discuss categories of gear (ex: framed vs frameless packs, quilts vs sleeping bags, etc).
Cost:
$40 per person
The workshop will run if there are a minimum of 4 participants signed up. If the minimum has not yet been met, we'll contact participants one week before the workshop to discuss options.

Instructor:
Your instructor for this course is Lindsey Barr. Lindsey grew up in central North Carolina, where she developed a love for science and the outdoors. She was introduced to camping and hiking at a young age through the Girl Scouts. In 2012, Lindsey left her aerospace engineering career behind to follow her dream of helping introduce others to the outdoors in a welcoming and empowering way. When she isn't at work, you can find them exploring area trails and waterways, enjoying Asheville's thriving live music scene, or in their art studio. In addition to hiking and backpacking, they enjoy paddling, rock climbing, cycling, fly fishing, knitting, and stained glass.
What to Bring:
Participants should come prepared with a notebook to take notes. And bring plenty of questions!
Cancellation Policy:
Payment in full is required to register. Workshop cost includes a 15% non-refundable administrative fee. Reservation may be cancelled up to 1 week before the trip for a refund (minus the 15% fee). Within 1 week, a 50% refund will be offered. Within 48 hours, a refund will only be offered if Blue Ridge Hiking Company cancels the workshop due to severe weather.
If your instructor does an exceptional job, please show your appreciation with a tip. Our team of highly trained professional guides never expects but always appreciates a tip. Industry standard gratuity is 15-20% of workshop cost.
