Even here in the mountains, the temperatures are heating up! Like much of the rest of the country, we're in the midst of a heat wave. And recreating outside can be particularly challenging on these hot days. Here are some of our favorite ways to beat the summer heat:
- Head up to High Elevation. Asheville sits around 2,500ft elevation and is surrounded by mountain peaks that are over 5,000 - 6,000ft. For every 1,000ft you increase in elevation, temperatures drop 3-5 degrees. So if it's 90 degrees in Asheville, it may be in the 70s at some of the higher peaks. Some of our favorite high elevation hikes within an hour of Asheville are Mt Mitchell, Craggy Gardens, Lane Pinnacle, Mt Pisgah, and Black Balsam Knob.
- Plan your Hike for Early or Late. While afternoon temperatures may be high, it still cools down overnight. So plan your hike for earlier in the morning or later in the evening and avoid the hottest part of the day. Maybe head to an east-facing hike for sunrise or a west-facing hike for sunset (don't forget your headlamp!). Bonus: you'll catch the trails when they tend to be less crowded, too!
- Choose a Hike Near Water. Take advantage of our cold mountain streams and opt for a hike near water. On some hikes, you can feel a noticeable drop in temperature as you get closer to creeks. Find a waterfall with a swimming hole (or a good spot to wade into the water) to cool off. Maybe this is the time to head to that hike with lots of creek crossings that's been on your bucket list? Just remember not to stack rocks, as it can disturb the endangered Hellbender Salamander. Please Note: Many mountain streams are very cold! And there are slick rocks and wildlife. Please use caution if you choose to swim or wade in water.
- Don't Forget Sun Protection! Protect your eyes and skin with sunglasses, sunscreen, a sun shirt, a hat, and/or an umbrella.
- Enjoy a Frozen Post-Hike Treat. There are many delicious ice cream shops in Western NC. Some of our favorites are Meadowsweet Creamery (Mars Hill), Dolly's (Pisgah Forest), The Hop (downtown, North Asheville, West Asheville, Black Mountain), Sunshine Sammy's (downtown), and The Freeze (West Asheville).
